Preparando-se para o Influxo de Luz Divina

September 2005
Preparing for the Influx of Divine Light
by Patricia Diane Cota-Robles

GOD BLESSES YOU!

THE BREATH OF LIFE
by Patricia Diane Cota-Robles

THE TWIN TRUTHS

FOR the proper understanding of Buddhism these opening stanzas are all-important. One of the Buddha’s key-thoughts was what modern psychologists call the “law of apperception”: the value of things depends upon our attitude to them.

Part of Gautama’s work of reform was a “transvaluation of values,” a shifting of emphasis; and, like the Stoics, he taught the indifference of the things of sense. “Men are disturbed,” said Epictetus, “not by things, but by the view they take of things.”

1. Mind it is which gives to things their quality, their foundation, and their being: whoso speaks or acts with impure mind, him sorrow dogs, as the wheel follows the steps of the draught-ox.

2. Mind it is which gives to things their quality,

[p. 22]

their foundation, and their being: whoso speaks or acts with purified mind, him happiness accompanies as his faithful shadow.

3. “He has abused me, beaten me, worsted me, robbed me”; those who dwell upon such thoughts never lose their hate.

4. “He has abused me, beaten me, worsted me, robbed me “; those who dwell: not upon such thoughts are freed of hate.

5. Never does hatred cease by hating; by not hating does it cease: this is the ancient law.

6. If some there are who know not by such hatred we are perishing, and some there are who know it, then by their knowledge strife is ended.

7. As the wind throws down a shaky tree, so Mara (Death) o’erwhelms him who is a seeker after vanity, uncontrolled, intemperate, slothful, and effeminate.

8. But whoso keeps his eyes from vanity, controlled and temperate, faithful and strenuous, Mara cannot overthrow, as the wind beating against a rocky crag.

9. Though an impure man don the pure yellow robe (of the Bhikkhu), himself unindued with temperance and truth, he is not worthy of the pure yellow robe.

10. He who has doffed his impurities, calm and clothed upon with temperance and truth, he wears the pure robe worthily.

11. Those who mistake the shadow for the

[p. 23]

substance, and the substance for the shadow, never attain the reality, following wandering fires (lit. followers of a false pursuit).

12. But if a man knows the substance and the shadow as they are, he attains the reality, following the true trail.

13. As the rain pours into the ill-thatched house, so lust pours into the undisciplined mind.

14. As rain cannot enter the well-thatched house, so lust finds no entry into the disciplined mind.

15. Here and hereafter the sinner mourns: yea mourns and is in torment, knowing the vileness of his deeds.

16. Here and hereafter the good man is glad: yea is glad and rejoices, knowing that his deeds are pure.

17. Here and hereafter the sinner is in torment: tormented by the thought “I have sinned”; yea rather tormented when he goes to hell.

18. Here and hereafter the good man rejoices; rejoices as he thinks “I have done well”: yea rather rejoices when he goes to a heaven.

19. If a man is a great preacher of the sacred text, but slothful and no doer of it, he is a hireling shepherd, who has no part in the flock.

20. If a man preaches but a little of the text and practises the teaching, putting away lust and hatred and infatuation; if he is truly wise and detached and seeks nothing here or hereafter, his lot is with the holy ones.

The Book of Filial Duty, by Ivan Chen, [1908], at sacred-texts.com

II. THE TWENTY-FOUR EXAMPLES OF FILIAL DUTY

Instead of the Hsiao Hsueh, or Teaching for the Young, which is usually grouped with The Book of Filial Duty, I have chosen The Twenty-four Examples of Filial Duty by way of illustration to the Hsiao Ching. They are naive and terse, and yet not without their simple charm. Even where they lend: themselves to exaggeration, as in the story of the old gentleman who dressed himself in gay garments and frisked in front of his very venerable parents, they are not meaningless nor devoid of humanity. The lesson to be drawn is that our duty towards our parents is the first obligation in life, and that we should go, if necessary, to all lengths to fulfil it. Nothing is known of the authorship of these stories, or the time in which they are written. Each story is accompanied by its commentary, and probably the stories themselves originated during the Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644), the commentaries belonging mostly to the latter years of that dynasty. The period dealt with in these tales is a very wide one, and ranges from the time of the great Emperor Shun (circa 2300 B.C.) down to the Sung

[p. 13]

dynasty (A.D. 900-1200). There have been many editions of The Twenty-four Examples in Chinese, mostly embellished with quaint and original woodcuts, of which the figure on the cover of the present volume, kindly supplied by Mrs. Lionel Giles, is an example.

III. FILIAL DUTY AND PARENTAL LOVE

In conclusion, I hope none of my readers will imagine, from these examples and the treatise that precedes them, that Chinese family life is cold and repellent, and devoid of mutual love. The moment a tiny life enters the circle it is guarded by the triple walls of kinship. In the children our parents return to us; in the children we survive. All through Chinese history the exile longs for return to wife and children. All through Chinese literature you will find allusion to the love of little ones which has been the heritage of the Chinese from time unknown. The Book of Odes, quoted in Mr. Ku Hung-ming’s eloquent translation of the Chung Yung, or Conduct of Life, for this Series, says:

When wives and children and their sires are one,
‘Tis like the harp and lute in unison.
When brothers live in concord and in peace,
The strains of harmony shall never cease.
The lamp of happy union lights the home,
And bright days follow when the children come.

[p. 14]

With the Chinese the natural joys of life have always been the most sought after. Home, family, friendship, landscape, and flowers–these are the pleasures which they delight in. The religion of Confucius is the religion of daily life. On the side of the parent there is responsibility; on the side of the child, obedience, but not a blind one. Of the responsibility of parents there is no question. Confucius himself laid down the law when he sentenced a father, who had brought an accusation against his son, to be imprisoned with him. On being remonstrated with, he made this memorable reply: “Am I to punish for a breach of filial piety one who has never been taught to be filially minded? Is not he who neglects to teach his son his duties equally guilty with the son who fails in them? Crime is not inherent in human nature, and therefore the father in the family and the government in the State are responsible for the crimes committed against filial piety and the public laws.”

On the other hand, the obedient son must be able to discriminate and not follow blindly, when the father is at fault. In the Li Chi, or Book of Rites, it is written: “When his parents are in error, the son must remonstrate with them with respect and gently. If they do not receive his reproof, he must strive more and more to be dutiful and respectful towards them till they are pleased, and then he must again point out their fault.”

[p. 15]

The Chinese give respect to the living, and also reverence the dead. It is from the past that they have tried to learn, and the past is a pathway which the feet of spirits have trodden and made luminous. And, moreover, no man can escape from his ancestors, even if he go to the uttermost parts of the earth and dwell among strangers. Over the heads of the family the politician, ancient and modern, looks to the State. But China, from the shelter and security of her myriad bulwarks, has watched the sun of many empires rise and set.

NOTE

IN preparing this little book for the press, I am indebted to Mr. Lionel Giles and Mr. L. Cranmer-Byng for their kind assistance. Mr. Giles has revised the English spelling of Chinese names according to the system almost universally adopted by sinologues to-day; while Mr. Cranmer-Byng has made himself responsible for the Introduction. As regards The Twenty-four Examples of Filial Duty, due acknowledgment must be made to Vol. VI. of The Chinese Repository, which contains the only complete translation of these stories, and has been extensively drawn upon for the present work.

“Spiritual Treasures – Final Edition”

Kriya Yoga
Spiritual Encyclopedia:
Spiritual definition and meaning of Kriya Yoga
Two old traditional words combined:
Kriya in Sanskrit means action, deed, effort and includes personal work and spiritual efforts. True
spiritual efforts always are efforts of selfless love.
Yoga to join, to unite, thus to reunite mankind with God.
Kriya Yoga as a combined word thus means to act with love and work in a loving way until all our
karma is dissolved and we are reunited with God. The purpose of Kriya Yoga is to free souls
entangled on earth by the power of divine love and to reunite souls with God. We human beings are
spiritual souls trapped in our karma related body on our planet earth.
What kind of work or effort does Kriya mean and why? Here on earth mankind is far from our origin,
our home in God. Mankind “fell” down step by step to this planet of dense material world as a result
of our self-created karma. Karma resulting in:
l Attachment to belongings and property
l Hatred
l War
l Revenge and retaliation
l Punishment
l Greed
l Stinginess
l Betrayal
l Abuse of others
l Abuse of own powers or positions for personal gain and profit or to manipulate others
l Exploitation of others
l … and other variations of selfish ego-manifestation.
Our past actions have caused karma resulting in pain to others includes pain to all creation, nature,
environment and God.
If you have the power to create troubles and pain to others, you also have the potential power to
reverse past actions by starting actions of love, work with love until all past negative karma is
dissolved in love. Miners buried under tons of rock and gravel have the choice to die, to hope for
rescue and wait, to work toward freedom or to hope for rescue but at the same time work toward
rescuer.

If we contribute our own and fullest possible efforts toward freedom in God, then we learn the
potential results and danger of creating karma and learn to avoid future karma. Hence without our
own conscious efforts toward union with God there can be no union with God. Union with God
requires readiness to love and to solve all past and future situations by sole means and power of love
only!
Kriya = Positive action and intense loving efforts to free ourselves
Hence if we got ourselves into troubles by means of our own efforts, we also have the power to free
ourselves. Positive action = Kriya, is needed to get ourselves out of self-created troubles and messy
life on earth. What kind of action got us here? Negative actions, selfish actions, painful actions,
abusing others, cheating others, betraying others, etc.
What kind of actions can dissolve all past negative actions? Positive actions, clean up actions, inner
and outer purification. Hate, selfishness and the like only can be healed by love and never by other
violent or negative actions. Thus actions of love only have the power to free us and to reunite us
with God. The actions of love = Kriya, needed to clean up our self created mess on earth include:
1. Sharing all with all
2. Helping all
3. Being useful to all others
4. Healing others
5. Giving freedom to others
6. Protecting freedom of others
7. Creating happiness and satisfaction in others
8. To care for others and to care about the holistic wellbeing and happiness of others
9. Healing “broken hearts”
10. Forgiving all others – to fully pardon all in all situations
11. Asking for forgiveness and pardon from others for our own past
12. Protecting God’s creation, environment and all nature
13. Acting as one family on earth – a family without color, without race, without borders of any
kind
14. Being honest and sincere in all situations to all
15. Treating all like family members of our own family
16. Striving for the happiness and wellbeing of all others above all other goals

SMOKEY THE BEAR SUTRA BY GARY SNYDER

SMOKEY THE BEAR SUTRA

BY GARY SNYDER

Once in the Jurassic about 150 million years ago, the Great Sun Buddha in this corner of the Infinite Void gave a discourse to all the assembled elements and energies: to the standing beings, the walking beings, the flying beings, and the sitting beings–even the grasses, to the number of thirteen billion, each one born from a seed, assembled there: a Discourse concerning Enlightenment on the planet Earth.

“In some future time, there will be a continent called America. It will have great centers of power called such as Pyramid Lake, Walden Pond, Mt. Rainier, Big Sur, Everglades, and so forth; and powerful nerves and channels such as Columbia River, Mississippi River, and Grand Canyon. The human race in that era will get into troubles all over its head, and practically wreck everything in spite of its own strong intelligent Buddha-nature.”

“The twisting strata of the great mountains and the pulsings of volcanoes are my love burning deep in the earth. My obstinate compassion is schist and basalt and granite, to be mountains, to bring down the rain. In that future American Era I shall enter a new form; to cure the world of loveless knowledge that seeks with blind hunger: and mindless rage eating food that will not fill it.”

And he showed himself in his true form of

SMOKEY THE BEAR

A handsome smokey-colored brown bear standing on his hind legs, showing that he is aroused and watchful.

Bearing in his right paw the Shovel that digs to the truth beneath appearances; cuts the roots of useless attachments, and flings damp sand on the fires of greed and war;

His left paw in the mudra of Comradely Display–indicating that all creatures have the full right to live to their limits and that of deer, rabbits, chipmunks, snakes, dandelions, and lizards all grow in the realm of the Dharma;

Wearing the blue work overalls symbolic of slaves and laborers, the countless men oppressed by a civilization that claims to save but often destroys;

Wearing the broad-brimmed hat of the west, symbolic of the forces that guard the wilderness, which is the Natural State of the Dharma and the true path of man on Earth:

all true paths lead through mountains

With a halo of smoke and flame behind, the forest fires of the kali-yuga, fires caused by the stupidity of those who think things can be gained and lost whereas in truth all is contained vast and free in the Blue Sky and Green Earth of One Mind;

Round-bellied to show his kind nature and that the great earth has food enough for everyone who loves her and trusts her;

Trampling underfoot wasteful freeways and needless suburbs, smashing the worms of capitalism and totalitarianism;

Indicating the task: his followers, becoming free of cars, houses, canned foods, universities, and shoes, master the Three Mysteries of their own Body, Speech, and Mind; and fearlessly chop down the rotten trees and prune out the sick limbs of this country America and then burn the leftover trash.

Wrathful but calm. Austere but Comic. Smokey the Bear will Illuminate those who would help him; but for those who would hinder or slander him…

HE WILL PUT THEM OUT.

Thus his great Mantra:

Namah samanta vajranam chanda maharoshana Sphataya hum traka ham mam

“I DEDICATE MYSELF TO THE UNIVERSAL DIAMOND BE THIS RAGING FURY BE DESTROYED”

And he will protect those who love the woods and rivers, Gods and animals, hobos and madmen, prisoners and sick people, musicians, playful women, and hopeful children:

And if anyone is threatened by advertising, air pollution, television, or the police, they should chant SMOKEY THE BEAR’S WAR SPELL:

DROWN THEIR BUTTS

CRUSH THEIR BUTTS

DROWN THEIR BUTTS

CRUSH THEIR BUTTS

And SMOKEY THE BEAR will surely appear to put the enemy out with his vajra-shovel.

Now those who recite this Sutra and then try to put it in practice will accumulate merit as countless as the sands of Arizona and Nevada.

Will help save the planet Earth from total oil slick.
Will enter the age of harmony of man and nature.
Will win the tender love and caresses of men, women, and beasts.
Will always have ripened blackberries to eat and a sunny spot under a pine tree to sit at.

AND IN THE END WILL WIN HIGHEST PERFECT ENLIGHTENMENT

…thus we have heard…

THE MYSTICAL QABALAH by Dion Fortune

THE YOGA OF THE WEST
1. Very few students of occultism know anything at all about the fountain-head whence their
tradition springs. Many of them do not even know there is a Western Tradition. Scholarship is
baffled by the intentional blinds and defences with which initiates both ancient and modern have
wrapped themselves about, and concludes that the few fragments of a literature which have come
down to us are medieval forgeries. They would be greatly surprised if they knew that these
fragments, supplemented by manuscripts that have never been allowed to pass out of the hands of
initiates, and completed by an oral tradition, are handed down in schools of initiation to this day,
and are used as the bases of the practical work of the Yoga of the West.
2. The adepts of those races whose evolutionary destiny is to conquer the physical plane have
evolved a Yoga technique of their own which is adapted to their special problems and peculiar
needs. This technique is based upon the well-known but little understood Qabalah, the Wisdom
of Israel.

3. It may be asked why it is that the Western nations should go to the Hebrew culture for their
mystical tradition? The answer to this question will be readily understood by those who are
acquainted with the esoteric theory concerning races and sub-races. Everything must have a source.
Cultures do not spring out of nothing. The seed-bearers of each new phase of culture must of
necessity arise within the preceding culture. No one can deny that Judaism was the matrix of the
European spiritual culture when they recall the fact that Jesus and Paul were both Jews. No race
except the Jewish race could possibly have served as the stock upon which the new dispensation
was to be grafted because no other race was monotheistic. Pantheism and polytheism had had their
day and a new and more spiritual culture was due. The Christian races owe their religion to the
Jewish culture as surely as the Buddhist races of the East owe theirs to the Hindu culture.

4. The mysticism of Israel supplies the foundation of modern Western occultism. It forms the
theoretical basis upon which all ceremonial is developed. Its famous glyph, the Tree of Life, is the
best meditation symbol we possess because it is the most comprehensive.
5. It is not my intention to write a historical study of the sources of the Qabalah, but rather to
show the uses that are made of it by modern students of the Mysteries. For although the roots of
our system are in tradition, there is no reason why we should be hidebound by tradition. A
technique that is being actually practised is a growing thing, for the experience of each worker
enriches it and becomes part of the common heritage.
6. It is not necessarily incumbent upon us to do certain things or hold certain ideas because the
Rabbis who lived before Christ had certain views. The world has moved on since those days and
we are under a new dispensation but what was true in principle then will be true in principle now,
and of value to us. The modern Qabalist is the heir of the ancient Qabalist, but he must reinterpret
doctrine and reformulate method in the light of the present dispensation if the heritage he has
received is to be of any practical value to him.
